eTwinning Short Online Course: Critical Digital Literacy and Disinformation

Abstract: Developing critical digital literacy supports individuals in understanding the structures and conventions of digital media, as well as in comprehending the content and the purpose of any narrative. It also encourages users to deploy digital tools appropriately and effectively to solve practical problems, either at an individual or community level, by making informed judgements and choices based on critical, aesthetic, and ethical perspectives. Finally, critical digital literacy is associated with issues of reputation, identity (persona) and membership/belonging in diverse digital contexts, while at the same moment assists individuals in critically examining the information they receive and make informed judgments about its credibility and reliability, as well as making them aware of their own online safety. Given this context, eTwinning may function as a safe international and collaborative environment in which students and teachers may develop their competences for navigating effectively both in the online and offline world of information, where disinformation is frequently considered a challenge. Concurrently, the unprecedented conditions formed by the pandemic, favoured the dissemination of fake news, indicating the need for preparedness and critical digital literacy competences.
